Found on Ebay: Vintage Hartmann Leather Suitcase

I’ve always been a fan of vintage luggage. Maybe I’ve watched too many old movies or listened to too many Sinatra albums, but when I see a piece of vintage luggage, I envision an exotic place and time, when you had to walk on the tarmac to your plane and the stewardesses still wore short skirts. When I see an old suitcase in a thrift or antique store I wonder, “Where have you been and what have you seen?” Of course, the answer could be,” I never made it out of Ohio…” But that would ruin the fun.

My latest find is a vintage Hartmann leather suitcase. The case is a perfect size for a carry on. Hartmann still makes high quality luggage and other goods, with a leather carry on costing you $500 and up.

So whether you’re going to Thailand or New York, you’ll be sure to stand out. If you never make it out of Ohio, just don’t tell me.

I have this same suitcase in a reddish brown color – it’s a set with a large suitcase and a smaller one. I’m trying to get an idea of how much I should sell either one in case I decide to.

Basically I want to ask you how much you paid for yours so I can get a ballpark figure, though I know this is not exactly the most polite and appropriate question to ask. If you do not feel comfortable saying, I do understand. But if not, I’d appreciate the help.

    Thank you!

    • Well, to be honest I didn’t buy the suitcase in the auction. BUT, I searched on ebay and am seeing a single red leather case listed for $150. Now will the lister get that? Not sure. This garment bag is listed at $250 with 5 days left, but no bidders. Even though it’s beat up, it’s still a beautiful case. has a tweed version for $45 (21″L). Depending on the condition of your set, and the fact that you have 3 pieces, I don’t see why you couldn’t fetch a pretty penny. Hartmann is a quality brand and holds up nicely. Anyone searching for one should know and appreciate that quality. My advice is to search “leather hartmann” in ebay and watch the listings. See what they sell for. If you do list the cases, please let me know and I’ll be happy to pass on the listing in a post.

In the early 80s, the suitcase shown above went for about $625. I have my grandfathers still with the original box and price tag.
